Constructing The Other

Constructing The Other delves into the concept of otherness and the role of power in its creation. The book explores how historical discrimination based on minor differences leads to a detachment from our shared humanity, enabling violence against those who are different.

By examining the horror genre, we reveal a link between media representations and real-world violence, highlighting how 'The Other' often manifests as monsters, reflecting societal fears and anxieties. Divided into two parts, the book first focuses on the experiences of the othered, then on the processes of othering. The triangles throughout the cover and pages symbolize the hierarchical power and they also guide the reader throughout the book.

In the first section of the book, we explore the issues of class, gender, and race, examining how the construction of these minority groups in our society relates to the concept of horror.
This is metaphorically illustrated through monsters like vampires, zombies, and ghosts, as well as through media representations that challenge the ideas of terror.

We chose four different text sizes, ranging from the largest to the smallest, to represent the power and hierarchy discussed throughout the book.

Has we transition to the second part of the book we portray real situations that have occurred or are occurring. Our goal is to question the power structure behind otherness through the exploration of contemporary issues.

In the second section of the book, we explore the role our system plays in instilling this feeling of otherness. The way in which they take advantage of this fear of the unknown
and those who are different. This is displayed through the rhetoric our leaders use when committing acts of war and terror.
